With local elections just around the corner, Shelby County GOP Chairman Cary Vaughn and spokeswoman Patti Possell joined KWAM’s “Wake Up Memphis” to discuss the party’s controversial endorsements.
Crime is at the forefront of issues for Memphians, and with limited Republican options, the Shelby County GOP endorsed several Democrats running for office. Vaughn said their choices involved several factors, including “who will be a friend to the party.”DOWNLOAD THE FREE KWAM APP HERE
For example, they endorsed Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner (D) for Memphis mayor.
“Right now, our number one issue is crime,” Possell said on why they chose him.
Vaughn also noted Bonner’s connections across the state that would be helpful in fighting crime in the city.“I don’t think there are any bona fide Republicans that are running,” he added on the mayoral race.
