Memphis Mayor Paul Young and Police Chief CJ Davis vowed to enforce a controversial policing ordinance that bans pretextual traffic stops.

Earlier this week, the city council learned that former Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland did not enforce the three police reform ordinances passed by city council members last April.

The former Mayor called the ordinances “dangerous” and “perhaps unlawful,” — in a letter sent to council members

During a press conference Thursday, both Young and Davis told reporters they will enforce the ordinances.

“We will enforce the ordinances as approved by the city council,” Young said.

Both officials have faced mounting pressure by pro-criminal groups like Decarcerate Memphis, who claim traffic stops discriminate against black drivers.
