The Memphis Police Department (MDP) is enforcing a city-wide curfew aimed at bringing down juvenile crime.

The curfew crackdown is part of the department’s new “crime abatement program” which seeks to curb lawlessness committed by youth in the downtown area.

The program came under fire by activists who claimed police officers would use the new crime-fighting unit to unjustly target black teenagers for dancing too loud music or selling candy, WREG reported.

Police Chief CJ Davis has since made it very clear MPD will not be targeting certain individuals.

Minors between 17 and 18 years old will have to be home by 11 p.m. on weekdays and 12 a.m. on weekends.

Kids under 16 will have to be off the streets by 10 p.m. during the week and 11 p.m. on weekends.
