State Rep. Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) turned a Sunday sermon into a political stump speech for Civil Rights Activist Van Turner.

Pearson, who endorsed Turner months ago, called on the congregation at Christ Missionary Baptist Church to back his preferred candidate.

“What we need is a Van Turner or a Paul Young,” Pearson preached. “In my sermon I had already wrote some stuff for Van cause you can’t write sermons without talking about mayor’s stuff and politics.”

The so-called Tennessee Three member then went after Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner

“We’ve got some people who are running, who don’t care about us – who look like us,” Pearson said. “Now if you get endorsed by the Republican Party of Shelby County, you don’t care about us just cause you look like us.”

The lawmaker admonished the flock to be “wise” when selecting the next Memphis Mayor.

“So we need to be wise as we go into the ballot booth,” he said.
