Shelby County Commission Votes to Rename ‘Racist’ President’s Day

George Washington has triggered Memphis lawmakers.

Shelby County Commissioner Henri Brooks declared President’s Day as racist, sponsoring a resolution which would rename Presidents Day to “Friends and Employee Holiday.”

The resolutional was titled “Racial Exclusion and Humiliation.”

Recognizing and honoring all Black enslaved persons bought, sold, and bred for profit by United States Presidents; and who built the White House itself including most other major buildings in the 18th century United States, such as Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and James Madison’s Montpelier
