Will Your Plants Survive the Winter Storm?

With temperatures dropping across the Mid-South, plants may struggle surviving the winter weather.

Memphis is on the border of USDA Zones 7+8 and we tend to grow plants that are borderline hardy. These near 0° temps and very brisk winds may top kill some of these marginal plants.

If possible, cover Gardenias, Loropetalums, Indian Hawthorn and Satsuki Azaleas with sheets to protect them from the drying winds. Wind speeds, in this case, are more concerning than temperatures.

Warm soil and rain just prior to the wind is the best scenario to help the plants through this. Even snow and freezing rain helps protect against the wind.

Tune in to Mid-South Gardening every Saturday from 6-9 AM as Vador, Kenneth and Jim take your questions and discuss a variety of garden topics.
