Memphis Republicans lost major races in Shelby County Thursday, with Democrat District Attorney candidate Steve Mulroy defeating DA Amy Weirich and Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris (D) defeating Republican challenger Worth Morgan.

The KWAM Decision Desk called both races at 11:36 p.m. CST. Harris beat Morgan 57.91 percent to 42.09 percent in the final tally, and Mulroy beat Weirich 56.13 percent to 43.87 percent.

Weirich spoke to supporters in a somber tone before the race was called for the George Soros-backed candidate Mulroy was declared the winner.

“It has been the honor of my life to serve as district attorney in the Shelby County District Attorney’s office,” Weirich said. “I don’t know what the future holds,” she added, saying she would continue to fight for victims.

Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert, the incumbent who found herself in controversy with the car tag debacle, beat Republican challenger Jeff Jacobs 48.91 percent to 40.87 percent. Halbert told FOX 13 the plate delays and long lines have been resolved.

National radio host Todd Starnes slammed Republicans Thursday night.

“This is really infuriating. The Republicans have got to listen to the base of the party, they’ve got to stop handpicking candidates and embrace the base of the party,” Starnes said.
