Mayoral hopeful Jennings Bernard told KWAM Friday that racism has infected the Memphis Police Department.

His comments a day after the Department of Justice launched an investigation into the Memphis Police Department over racial profiling.

“[Racism] isn’t just a problem in MPD, it’s a problem in Memphis,” Bernard told “Wake Up Memphis” hosts Todd Starnes and Ben Deeter.

Starnes pushed back, asking Bernard to back up the claims against MPD with data.

Bernard, who served as a deputy sheriff for 18 years, shared his personal experience of being profiled by other deputies and Memphis police officers.
