Mayoral Candidate: Only 2 Councilmen Knew Fallen MPD Officer’s Name

Memphis City Councilman and mayoral candidate Frank Colvett Jr. joined “Wake Up Memphis” with Ben Deeter to talk about the rampant crime in the city and what to do about it.

Police Chief C.J. Davis went before the city council this week to talk about the city’s police department and the out-of-control crime rate.

The information that was given left “jaws hitting the floor,” Councilman Colvett said.

Colvett reported that they learned the number of aggravated assaults and carjackings is up all across the city of Memphis, and more than 80 percent of these are being committed by juveniles.

Meanwhile, the Memphis Police Department is severely understaffed and underappreciated.

Memphis Police officer Geoffery Redd was gunned down on Feb. 2 and died a couple of weeks later. The local media coverage has been almost nonexistent, and the city council neglected the case as well.

“I was one of only two council members who knew Officer Redd’s name,” Colvett said.
