After Memphis Fire Stations have been hit multiple times in the past few weeks with break-ins and even a stolen car, locals are demanding increased security. Thomas Malone, President of the International Association of Firefighters Local 1784, tells guest host Todd Starnes on “Wake Up Memphis” that this isn’t like anything the fire stations have seen before in Memphis.

Malone says that the firefighters are in shock about the recent crimes.

“The fire station has always been a safe haven and now it seems to be the target,” he says.

With the break-ins and a firefighter’s car being stolen in such a short span of time, it’s put the spotlight on the lack of security at stations. Fortunately, Malone says that the fire administration has formed a team and is working on improvements for the over 50 fire stations in the area.

“I think by the first of next week you’ll see some cameras up starting at station 55,” Malone adds.

For each station, they’ll need at least four cameras, so costs add up quickly. The hope is that the cameras at least act as a deterrent.

“I’m looking for a lot of this red tape to be erased and this thing to get done in a quick fashion,” Malone tells Starnes.
