Following Tyre Nichols’ death at the hands of Memphis police officers, his family announced they are filing a lawsuit against the city of Memphis, 10 former and current city employees, and Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis.
The $500 million federal lawsuit targets the practices of Memphis’ special police unit SCORPION, which has now been disbanded, and the practices of the city of Memphis in this case. The lawsuit alleges “unjustified force” on Jan. 7 earlier this year towards Nichols. The incident was captured on video and showed multiple police officers in the police unit beating Nichols. He later died of his injuries.
